Selecting a sleeping bag comes down to determining what sort of temperature's are you going to encounter and how much weight you're prepared to carry. The North Face have the right sort of bag for every condition. The GearGuys would use a bag like the Nova in the New Zealand Alps, South American Andes or perhaps Himalayan peaks less than 7000m. Always check expected minimum temps you'll encounter and then compare with bag ratings. We have found The North Face® temperature ratings to be closer to survival ratings than comfort ratings, so the -18°C Nova temperature rating is probably closer to a -10°C comfort rating. Temperature ratings do tend to be very controversial at the best of times and it becomes a very personal thing at the end of the day. If you're a cold sleeper, for a little more weight and money, check out the Solar Flare.

The most critical component of any down sleeping bag is the quality of the down. At the high end, you have 800+ loft goose down. This quality of down is both rare and expensive. It can only be harvested from Eastern European geese during the summer months when they are partial to a light plucking. Done by hand, it's extremely labour intensive and time consuming - the result is the most incredible down that offers the best warmth-to-weight ratio of any insulation material. It has a super high loft so your bag is extra puffy offering maximum insulation. It is also highly compressible, so the bag packs down tightly.

The Nova comes in a both a regular and long length. For mountain trips, we recommend the long which will accommodate your inner boots and act like a drying room and have them warm and ready to go in the morning. We also love the vaulted foot box which is quite simply an ergonomically curved footbox that provides sufficient space for your feet to flex and move naturally. This encourages continued blood circulation to the lower extremities while also eliminating dead air space, ultimately keeping you warmer and more comfortable.

A special feature to The North Face® Nova bags that GearGuys love is the Climashield™ Prism pads in the compression zones of the sleeping bag. In plain speak tech language, these are synthetic insulation pads in the high compression spots of your sleeping bag; head, shoulders, back, bum and feet. Normally the down get's compressed with your weight and creates cold spots but with the synthetic insulation pads, you'll find this won't happen. The North Face® claim it provides up to 13% greater thermal efficiency to their bags. Simple but effective innovation.

The external shell fabric is Hyvent Shadowlite, a lightweight, waterproof, breathable fabric developed by The North Face®. This will help keep your bag dry and lofting in those sometimes damp mountain environments. It must be noted that because the bag is stitch quilted, the seams are not sealed, so in effect you have have highly water resistant bag, but it's not waterproof. GearGuys strongly recommend taking a bivy bag if you're planning on spending the night out without nylon overhead.

At a average weight of a kilo and a half, the Nova is an exceptionally warm bag allowing you to travel fast and light and still enjoy some warmth and comfort when you bed down.
